1 of 5 The best way is to start from scratch, says academic recovery specialist Ian Roberts.
“If you have a course that you are interested in and you are able to do some work that’s not quite there then the best thing is to find a new course that matches,” he said.
The first step is to go to the relevant department for information on the academic courses you want to pursue.
“You can go to their website and go through the information and see what they have available,” said Roberts.
The best course for someone who is just getting started is a course from a major academic university.
But, he added, there are many courses that are good to start with and are worth considering.
You may have a chance of going to a college with a strong academic program and doing some work there.
“There’s lots of things you can do there to get into a more prestigious institution, so you could go into the same academic program,” he added.
If you want more, there is a good chance you can find a job in an academic sector or in another academic department, but if you want a more career-focused academic program, you need to do a bit of work in your local area.
“Once you get into that career path, you’ll find that most of the jobs in academia are in areas where you might want to study and it’s not something that you need a PhD in,” he explained.
But the fact is that the vast majority of academics are not experts in the field.
“The best thing to do is to look for a job, to look at job vacancies, or to look on LinkedIn for a particular position, and to just take that and apply for it,” he stressed.
“But you need some kind of qualifications to be able to get in.”
If you’re looking for a career, a degree may be your best option, but Roberts said you might have to take a course in a different field.
The last thing you want is to be stuck in an area where you have to do research and do research.
“It’s always important to have a bit more flexibility and the ability to work with the people who are working in that area,” he advised.
However, there might be some academic courses that you should start with if you are keen to get more work experience.
“I would look at a career in the sciences, for example,” he admitted.
“Maybe you could work with some scientists to do this, but you also need to look into research opportunities,” he noted.
“And then you’ll need to have some experience in some other areas.”
If that’s the case, you can also find work in academia through a PhD or post-doctoral programme.
This can be as a teaching assistant or a lecturer.
“So you might find yourself doing a lot of work with a research group,” said Robertson.
“In this case, there may be a particular research area that you’d like to work in and so you can apply for the position.
And then, if you’re a really good teacher you might also have a post-doc in that field.”
But, as well as teaching, you will also need some professional experience.
This is where you will need to be.
“Most people who get into academic research have been teaching, for instance,” said Robert.
“What you need is to have experience working in a lab or at a research lab, with a particular skill set.
And that’s where you can take a job.”
You will also want to look out for career opportunities in other academic fields.
“Look at research opportunities in areas that are related to your chosen discipline, for you may have the skills that you can put into your chosen area,” said Robinson.
“That’s where it’s best to get some sort of work experience in a field that you’re interested in.”
You may also be interested in careers in other parts of the world.
“People are always looking for opportunities to work abroad, or for an academic position,” said Robinsons, adding that it’s important to remember that this is a career you can leave at any time.
“Sometimes it may be better to start when you’re in your early twenties,” he cautioned.
“As a person who has been teaching for a long time, it’s very important to get the right career in mind before you get there.”
